About the manufacturer of our instruments

Early in the 20th century, Mr. Xu Fu, the founder of the Ye Da company of Guangzhou, China, began to explore the mysteries of Italian violin making. His expertise quickly grew and the quality of his work was recognised by the American Violin Makers Association. At home in China he was awarded the title of 'Maestro of Violin Making'.

Mr. Xu's eldest son, Mr. Zhangcheng Xu, has continued the family's successful business under his father's guidance. As a student Zhangcheng studied under the direction of a great master at the Central Conservatorium, where he proved his ability by winning a 'distinction' for brilliancy of tone in an international competition of violin making.

Mr. Xu's second son, Mr. Zhangming Xu, is widely recognised for his bow-making ability. Zhangming's bows have been adopted by virtuoso and orchestral violinists worldwide.

An essential element of making long-lasting, superior violins with a consistently improving traditional sound is in the strict selection of the wood used. Precise cutting and stacking in a controlled, well-ventilated environment is required to achieve natural drying and seasoning, combined with periodic rotation of the stacks, which is essential for preservation.

Ye Da are constantly seeking ways to improve the quality and longevity of their instruments, in particular with the refining of the pigment and processes of a cremonial style varnish. The Ye Da varnish is the result of extensive research into historical archives, combined with careful analysis and experimentation. It produces the unique finish that obtains transparency without detracting from the brilliance of sound.
